Use placeholder text on common form inputs<\/h2>\n<p>On small forms where context is obvious, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hongkiat.com\/blog\/html5-placeholder\/\" rel=\"noopener\">use placeholder text<\/a> instead of labels (e.g. login forms, search boxes or address forms).<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, if the user needs a label to understand what the context of the input is, don\u2019t rely on placeholder text. Make sure the label is always present, even after they\u2019ve inserted content.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/mobile-content-tips\/lululemon-home.jpg\" width=\"320\" height=\"382\" alt=\"Lululemon page\"><\/figure>\n<h2>2. Less is more<\/h2>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hongkiat.com\/blog\/login-registration-form\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Entering information into forms<\/a> is much harder on a mobile device, right? So, ratchet down required fields to a bare minimum. Or, better yet, don\u2019t include form inputs you don\u2019t require.<\/p>\n<p>Ask your users to enter the information later or omit it altogether.<\/p>\n<h2>3. Place labels above form inputs<\/h2>\n<p>When you use labels they should be placed above form elements. Using top-aligned labels ensures that if the mobile browser zooms in on the input, the user doesn\u2019t lose the context of the input.<\/p>\n<h2>4. Make sure that text is always text<\/h2>\n<p>No image-based text. Nope, none. Learn to use CSS as it\u2019s meant to be used because different screen dimensions and display densities will wreak havoc on your text if you flatten it into an image. Added benefits to using text for text include accessibility, performance, graceful degradation and general usability.<\/p>\n<p>Services like <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/fonts.adobe.com\/\">TypeKit<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fontsquirrel.com\/\">FontSquirrel<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/fonts.google.com\/\">Google Web Fonts<\/a> make is easy to design beautiful text.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/mobile-content-tips\/custom-fonts.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"265\" alt=\"Lululemon page\"><\/figure>\n<h2>5. Keep headings shorter than short<\/h2>\n<p>Headings that wrap over more than two lines push your content down the page and often out of frame for users. Keep them short, focused and descriptive without telling the whole story.<\/p>\n<p>Like in this example below, <strong>while it probably looks fine on the desktop, that\u2019s a mighty long heading for a smartphone.<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/mobile-content-tips\/techvibes1.jpg\" width=\"320\" height=\"411\" alt=\"Techvibes heading\"><\/figure>\n<h2>6. Declare your font size in pixels for perfect control<\/h2>\n<p>We recommend you use pixels (px) for font size because it offers absolute control over the text. In addition, we recommend using a unit-less line-height because it doesn\u2019t inherit a percentage value of its parent element. Instead, it\u2019s based on a multiplier of the font-size. Regarding font size, <strong>we recommend at least 14 px.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Even if that seems really big, it\u2019s the right thing to do. The only time to go smaller (and just to a minimum of 12 px) is on very precise labels for forms.<\/p>\n<h2>7. Treat your content like it\u2019s a king<\/h2>\n<p>Think long and hard about the job of each page. Then make sure that all the content on that page helps your users accomplish that job.<\/p>\n<p>Simple beats pretty. <strong>Simple also tends to be pretty.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>8. Keep copy short<\/h2>\n<p>Be brief. Be brilliant. Be gone.<\/p>\n<h2>9. Save time with font-based icons<\/h2>\n<p>We \u2764 icons! They spice up your designs. To avoid managing a sprite sheet with both retina assets and smaller icons, opt for a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hongkiat.com\/blog\/webfont-icons\/\" rel=\"noopener\">font-based icon<\/a> set like: <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/fontawesome.com\/\">Font Awesome<\/a>; <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.glyphish.com\/\">glyphish<\/a>; <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/designbombs.com\/iconsweets\/\">iconsweets<\/a>; or <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/symbolset.com\/\">symbolset<\/a> or you can always make your own.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/mobile-content-tips\/font-based-icons.jpg\" alt=\"\" height=\"240\" width=\"478\"><\/figure>\n<h2>10. Images need love too<\/h2>\n<p>Images tell a story and should be carefully resized to ensure that their story translates seamlessly onto a new screen size. Avoid simply sizing down images.<\/p>\n<p>The context has changed and so the images should too if you expect them to properly tell their story.<\/p>\n<h2>11. Go easy on the images<\/h2>\n<p>Drop your gradient images and buttons and make them lovely with CSS. Mobile devices support some of the most advanced CSS functions of any browsers so pretty much anything you want to do in imagery you can do with styling.<\/p>\n<p>Additional benefits includes: better scaling, better load times, happier users. Yays! all around.<\/p>\n<h2>12. Use some asset management magic<\/h2>\n<p>Generate <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hongkiat.com\/blog\/scalable-vector-graphic-browsers\/\" rel=\"noopener\">retina icons<\/a> and use the CSS background-size attribute to size them down for non-retina devices. They\u2019ll still look great and won\u2019t take up that much more space than the smaller versions.<\/p>\n<h2>13.
