Microsoft has unveiled the new Windows 8...\t\t\t\t\t\t<span>Read more<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Surface RT Setup & Personalization<\/h2>\n<p>Here\u2019s a few things to get you started on using your Surface RT.<\/p>\n<h3>1. Update Windows And Apps<\/h3>\n<p>First and foremost, you should update Windows and the apps that are pre-installed into the system.<\/p>\n<p>To update Windows, go to<strong>Charms Menu<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Settings<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Change PC settings<\/strong>. Scroll to the bottom and you\u2019ll see <strong>Windows Update<\/strong>, download and install the updates and restart the device if prompted to.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/customize-ms-surface-rt\/update.jpg\" alt=\"Windows Update\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\"><\/figure>\n<p>To update pre-installed apps, go to the <strong>Store <\/strong>app and tap on the green word, <strong>Update <\/strong>at the top right corner.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/customize-ms-surface-rt\/store.jpg\" alt=\"Store\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\"><\/figure>\n<h3>2. Easier Login With PIN<\/h3>\n<p>Since the Surface RT is linked to a Microsoft account, you\u2019ll have to input your account password to unlock the device. Your preferences linked to the account will be synced into your Surface tablet. You will be prompted for the same password every time you want to use your device, but ther eis the option to set a <strong>4-number PIN lock as a login<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>To do this, open the <strong>Charms Menu<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Settings<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Change PC Settings<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Users<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Sign-in options<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Create a PIN<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/customize-ms-surface-rt\/pin.jpg\" alt=\"PIN\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\"><\/figure>\n<h3>3. Enhance Security With Picture Password<\/h3>\n<p>If you think the 4-number PIN is not secure enough, then you can try the new \u2018Picture Password\u2019 as a way to unlock your device. You\u2019ll find it at the same place you used to create a PIN, or just follow this path: <strong>Charms Menu<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Settings<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Change PC Settings<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Users<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Sign-in options<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Create a picture password<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>It will then take you through the steps and show you the gestures you can use to create a Picture Password. Do note that you have to use your own picture and not one that is available within the device.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/customize-ms-surface-rt\/picture-password.jpg\" alt=\"Picture Password\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\"><\/figure>\n<h3>4. Setup Your Personal E-Mail Account<\/h3>\n<p>By default, the Mail app will show emails from whatever email address you used to log in. If this is not your main email address, you can use other accounts from Hotmail, Outlook, Google or your own domain.<\/p>\n<p>To add an account, <strong>open the Mail app<\/strong> and then activate the <strong>Charms Menu<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Settings<\/strong>. Then tap on <strong>Accounts<\/strong>. You will see <strong>Add an account<\/strong> on the right sidebar.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/customize-ms-surface-rt\/email.jpg\" alt=\"Email\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\"><\/figure>\n<p>If you don\u2019t want emails from your Microsoft account to be displayed on the live tiles, you can open the <strong>Charms Menu<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Settings<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Accounts<\/strong>, tap on the <strong>email account you do not want shown<\/strong>, and <strong>untick <\/strong>\u2018Email\u2019 under <strong>Content to sync<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>5. Choose Modern UI Color Schemes<\/h3>\n<p>Don\u2019t like the color scheme you are dealt with? Good news, you can change the color scheme and the background design of the Modern UI. Open the <strong>Charms Menu<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Settings<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Change PC settings<\/strong> &gt;<strong> Personalize<\/strong> to pick a different color scheme.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/customize-ms-surface-rt\/personalization.jpg\" alt=\"Personalization\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\"><\/figure>\n<p>You can also change the <strong>lock screen picture<\/strong> here.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/customize-ms-surface-rt\/lockscreen.jpg\" alt=\"Lockscreen\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\"><\/figure>\n<h3>6. Managing Modern UI Tiles<\/h3>\n<p>You would probably prefer one app over the other, so it makes sense to personalise your tiles to reflect that rank of importance. Rearrange your app tiles by <strong>tapping and holding a tile to move it around<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The tiles can be made bigger or smaller to suit your personal needs, but note that smaller live tiles will display less information. If, however, you don\u2019t want your information to be showing on the tiles, you can disable this temporarily via <strong>Charms Menu<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Settings<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Tiles<\/strong> then tap on <strong>Clear<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>7. Naming your UI Tiles<\/h3>\n<p>You can also name groups of tiles by <strong>pinching with 2 fingers to zoom out of the Modern UI view. <\/strong>Flick downwards on any of the groups to bring up the menu on the bottom (or right click on your mouse). Tap on <strong>Name group<\/strong> and throw in a cool name, click <strong>Name<\/strong> and repeat for all other groups that need renaming.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/customize-ms-surface-rt\/group.jpg\" alt=\"Group Names\" width=\"500\" height=\"364\"><\/figure>\n<h3>8. Share Photos<\/h3>\n<p>To share photos or screenshots through the <strong>Photos app<\/strong>, select the photo and bring out the <strong>Charms Menu<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Share<\/strong>. From there, you can share it by <strong>Email<\/strong>, upload it to <strong>SkyDrive<\/strong> or through other apps that support in-built sharing.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/customize-ms-surface-rt\/share.jpg\" alt=\"Sharing\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\"><\/figure>\n<h3>9. Enable Faster App Switching Multitasking<\/h3>\n<p>Swiping in from the left edge of the screen will show the multitasking bar, where you see all your recently used apps. However, you can set this gesture to take you directly to the last app you were using.<\/p>\n<p>To do this, open the <strong>Charms Menu<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Settings<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Change PC Settings<\/strong> &gt; <strong>General<\/strong> and under <strong>App switching, turn on the second option<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>To show the multitasking bar when this option is enabled, swipe inwards from the left edge of the display then swipe back to the left.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/customize-ms-surface-rt\/multitasking.jpg\" alt=\"Faster Multitasking\" width=\"500\" height=\"312\"><\/figure>\n<h3>10. Social Integration<\/h3>\n<p>The <strong>People<\/strong> app is a great way to receive multiple feeds of your social networks simultaneously. You can connect your Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn accounts to see your feed.<\/p>\n<p>Add your Hotmail, Outlook or Google account by going to the \u2018People\u2019 app and following the path: <strong>Charms Menu<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Settings<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Accounts<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Add an account.<\/strong> Sign in to have your contacts transferred over.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/customize-ms-surface-rt\/people.jpg\" alt=\"People App\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\"><\/figure>\n<p>There is also the native \u2018Messaging\u2019 app which not only connects to contacts linked to your Microsoft account; it can also connect to Facebook chat which allows you to receive chat notifications and reply straight to the to the chat thread.<\/p>\n<p>To set this up, go to the Messaging app and open the <strong>Charms Menu<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Settings<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Accounts<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Add an account<\/strong> and login with your Facebook details.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/customize-ms-surface-rt\/messaging.jpg\" alt=\"Messaging App\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\"><\/figure>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Once you get it out of the box, you need only do a handful of things to set up your Microsoft Surface RT: select a language, accept the terms and conditions, name your device, connect to your home Wi-Fi and tweak some privacy settings.
