That\u2019s an impressive figure considering that Facebook was only founded in 2004.<\/p>\n<p>One can\u2019t help but wonder what is it that makes Facebook such a popular and successful social networking site. It has even gotten to a point where people could get addicted to Facebook, an unofficial condition known as <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fenichel.com\/facebook\/\">Facebook Addiction Disorder (FAD)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If Facebook can be so alluring, there must be something about the activities within that users can derive satisfaction from. So what do people actually get out of Facebook? Perhaps by looking at the most common activities that users engage in on Facebook, we might be able to tell the psychological and social appeal of the social networking site:<\/p>\n<h2>Updating of Status<\/h2>\n<p>If you\u2019re a Facebook user like myself (and like the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcmag.com\/archive\/facebook-used-by-half-of-the-worlds-internet-users-save-asia-293678\">majority of internet users<\/a>), you\u2019ll know that there are <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hongkiat.com\/blog\/types-of-facebook-updates\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>all kinds of status updates<\/strong><\/a> out there on your newsfeed. It ranges from the type where the user tells you what he or she is doing at the moment, to random philosophical musings.<\/p>\n<p>Then there are users who try to be mysterious with their updates and get everyone guessing about what they meant, or those whose updates are simply complaints about their lives. We\u2019re, after all, social beings who wish to connect with the rest of the world.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/psychology-of-facebook\/facebook-status.jpg\" alt=\"updating-status\" height=\"436\" width=\"350\"><\/figure>\n<p>The satisfaction comes about when <strong>our statuses get acknowledged<\/strong>, or even better, \u2018approved\u2019. Deep inside, we users know that each time we update our statuses, many of our \u2018friends\u2019 will get to see it and possibly react to it.<\/p>\n<p>It is this awareness that makes us want to shout out (in fact, status updates used to be known as \u2018shoutouts\u2019 in Facebook) our statuses. Thereafter, it gradually becomes a conditioning process where the user gets rewarded with acknowledgment and approval each time his or her status receives feedback from \u2018friends\u2019.<\/p>\n<h2>Commenting & Liking<\/h2>\n<p>According to Pew Internet, it was found in a study on social networking sites that commenting and \u2018liking\u2019 another user\u2019s posts make up the majority of what users engage in while on Facebook on any given day. Why is this so?<\/p>\n<p>One possible reason could be that since <strong>we appreciate the gratifications arising from being acknowledged or approved by others<\/strong> through means of \u2018liking\u2019 or commenting on our posts, we do the same to others as a sign of goodwill.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"note\"><strong>Read Also: <\/strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hongkiat.com\/blog\/facebook-etiquette\/\" rel=\"noopener\"> Facebook Etiquette: 10 Do\u2019s and Dont\u2019s<\/a><\/p>\n<p>As the saying goes, \"Do unto others as you would others do unto you\", the concept of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Reciprocity_(social_psychology)\">reciprocity<\/a> is very much at play here. It becomes a mutually dependent relationship in which both sides will keep getting the same fulfillment from \u2018liking\u2019 and commenting on each other\u2019s posts.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/psychology-of-facebook\/likecoholic.jpg\" alt=\"commenting-and-liking\" height=\"728\" width=\"500\"><\/figure>\n<p>Reciprocity aside, you must be wondering aren\u2019t their times when we genuinely like another user\u2019s post because it is meaningful, witty, etc? Indeed, most of the time I <em>feel<\/em> I respond to posts I like and not because I want the other user to respond in kind.<\/p>\n<p>The point I\u2019m making is that sometimes it\u2019s not easy to determine our truest intention from time to time because all these may occur at a subconscious level.<\/p>\n<p>Why can\u2019t we just look at their witty posts, smile, and be done with it? Why do we <em>have<\/em> to \u2018like\u2019 or comment? There\u2019re no straightforward answers.<\/p>\n<h2>Checking-In<\/h2>\n<p>With the proliferation of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hongkiat.com\/blog\/tag\/smartphones\/\" rel=\"noopener\">smartphones<\/a> in recent years, users are turning to the Facebook mobile app to engage in their activities. One activity that is a trademark of the Facebook mobile app is that of checking-in, due to smartphones possessing GPS and thus meant to be used on-the-go.<\/p>\n<p>Checking-in carries a substantial risk of becoming (in extreme cases) a victim of stalking in the offline world. The intriguing thing here is that even though <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hongkiat.com\/blog\/5-things-that-shouldnt-be-on-your-facebook\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Facebook users are aware that their privacy is at stake<\/a>, they are still willing to compromise them just to share with others their present location.<\/p>\n<p>This begs the question: What kind of satisfaction do we get when we tell others where we are right now and where we\u2019ve been to?<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/psychology-of-facebook\/facebook-check-in.jpg\" alt=\"facebook-check-in\" height=\"468\" width=\"500\"><\/figure>\n<p>As it is with all other updates or posts on Facebook, <strong>the places checked-in by the user show others what type of person he or she is<\/strong>. Yet, checking-in is a different level from status updates, commenting, or \u2018liking\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Checking-in is an action because <strong>you have to be there physically<\/strong> (that is, if you have been truthful), so there is actually a sense of achievement when you are where you say you are. After all, action speaks louder than words.<\/p>\n<p>There are other legitimate reasons for users to want to check-in everywhere they go. Some like to keep records of where they\u2019ve been to and look back at the adventures they had as if marking their accomplishments and seeking gratifications from that. Others leverage on the ability to locate \u2018friends\u2019 who are around the vicinity and to let others locate them as well.<\/p>\n<h2>Posting Photos<\/h2>\n<p>They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Indeed, nothing says more about you on Facebook than the photos you use as your profile picture and cover and the photos you post on your wall from time to time.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, if we compare checking-in and posting photos, the latter is an even more substantial proof for what it is you do (unless you doctored the photos). Words are just words in your status updates, check-ins can also be fabricated, but photos? Least likely.<\/p>\n<p>When we share our photos with other Facebook users, we are showing them the type of person we are in the most believable way.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/psychology-of-facebook\/facebook-photo-sharing.jpg\" alt=\"posting-photos-on-facebook\" height=\"333\" width=\"500\"><\/figure>\n<p>From a psychological point of view, revealing photos of ourselves in action is a form of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Impression_management\">impression management<\/a>, in which <strong>we try to influence the way people see us<\/strong>.
