The Barong mask is worn by dancers who portray the good spirit (Barong) in its eternal battle against the evil spirit, Rangda. The story is told in a traditional Balinese dance that is popular with tourists and locals in Bali. In today\u2019s tutorial, we are going to recreate a Balinese Barong Mask.<\/p>\n<p>We will start with a pencil sketch, and this is what our final result will look like:<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/balinese-barong-mask\/barong-mask-final-result.jpg\" width=\"579\" height=\"646\" alt=\"Balinese Barong Mask\"><\/figure>\n<p>The mask looks scary, but don\u2019t forget, this is the good guy. Before we get started, take note of what you will need.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.deviantart.com\/faqeeh\/art\/Small-square-253967383\">Small Square Pattern<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.deviantart.com\/faqeeh\/art\/Barong-Pattern-292236551\">Barong Pattern Brush<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.deviantart.com\/faqeeh\/art\/Balinese-Barong-Sketch-292221784\">Balinese_Barong_Sketch<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>The Head, Eyes and Nose<\/h2>\n<h3>Step 1<\/h3>\n<p>Sketch the barong mask with a pencil and then scan it into your computer, or you can use <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.deviantart.com\/faqeeh\/art\/Balinese-Barong-Sketch-292221784\">this ready-made Barong Mask sketch<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/balinese-barong-mask\/barong-mask-step-001.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"590\" alt=\"Balinese Barong Mask\"><\/figure>\n<h3>Step 2<\/h3>\n<p>Create a new 1800 x 2000 pixel document. Use the <strong>Pen Tool (P) <\/strong>to draw the image. Draw the head with the <strong>#a61a0d<\/strong> color setting and set the <strong>Pen Tool<\/strong> to <strong>Shape Layer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/balinese-barong-mask\/barong-mask-step-002a.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"500\" alt=\"Balinese Barong Mask\"><\/figure>\n<p>Every time we draw a path with <strong>Shape Layer<\/strong> setting, we will make a new layer automatically. But the layer will cover up the pencil sketch and may cause difficulties while drawing the full shape. I have a trick to overcome this problem You can decrease the opacity of the sketch until we can see the pencil line clearly.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/balinese-barong-mask\/barong-mask-step-002b.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"500\" alt=\"Balinese Barong Mask\"><\/figure>\n<p>This decreased opacity setting is tentative. We will return it 100% later.<\/p>\n<p>You can also try turning off the layer and turning on the path.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/balinese-barong-mask\/barong-mask-step-002c.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"500\" alt=\"Balinese Barong Mask\"><\/figure>\n<p>No matter which method you choose, or if you have your own method the important thing is it aids your drawing.<\/p>\n<h3>Step 3<\/h3>\n<p>After drawing the head, draw the nose. The color setting for this is <strong>#831409<\/strong>. It is darker than the head.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/balinese-barong-mask\/barong-mask-step-003.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" alt=\"Balinese Barong Mask\"><\/figure>\n<h3>Step 4<\/h3>\n<p>Hide the head layer. Draw the right hole, left hole and divide for the nose. Use <strong>#dca115<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/balinese-barong-mask\/barong-mask-step-004a.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" alt=\"Balinese Barong Mask\"><\/figure>\n<p>To make a hole, we can use the <strong>Ellipse Too<\/strong>l. Then copy path (<span class=\"key\">Ctrl<\/span> \/ <span class=\"key\">Cmd<\/span> + <span class=\"key\">C<\/span>) and paste path (<span class=\"key\">Ctrl<\/span> \/ <span class=\"key\">Cmd<\/span> + <span class=\"key\">V<\/span>). Resize the new one smaller, then set subtract.<\/p>\n<figure> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/balinese-barong-mask\/barong-mask-step-004b.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" alt=\"Balinese Barong Mask\"><\/figure>\n<p>We need to distort the hole in order to get a natural view. Just use <strong>Pen Tool (P)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/balinese-barong-mask\/barong-mask-step-004c.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"200\" alt=\"Balinese Barong Mask\"><\/figure>\n<h3>Step 5<\/h3>\n<p>Add these layer styles to the right hole, left hole and divide.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Drop Shadow<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Blend Mode: Multiply<\/li>\n<li>Opacity: 31%<\/li>\n<li>Angle: 45\u00ba<\/li>\n<li>Distance: 1 px<\/li>\n<li>Spread: 0%<\/li>\n<li>Size: 1 px<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Outer Glow<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Blend Mode: Multiply<\/li>\n<li>Opacity: 75%<\/li>\n<li>Set to black<\/li>\n<li>Technique: Softer<\/li>\n<li>Size: 15 px<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Bevel and Emboss<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Style: Inner Bevel<\/li>\n<li>Technique: Smooth<\/li>\n<li>Depth: 100%<\/li>\n<li>Direction: Up<\/li>\n<li>Size: 1 px<\/li>\n<li>Angle: 45\u00ba<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And collect them into one group.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/balinese-barong-mask\/barong-mask-step-005a.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"900\" alt=\"Balinese Barong Mask\"><\/figure>\n<p>You will get this.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/balinese-barong-mask\/barong-mask-step-005b.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"350\" alt=\"Balinese Barong Mask\"><\/figure>\n<h3>Step 6<\/h3>\n<p>We need to add a dark side to parts of the nose. First, create a new layer in front of the left hole. Then set <strong>Blend Mode<\/strong> to <strong>Multiply<\/strong>. Then make a clipping mask (<span class=\"key\">Cmd<\/span> + <span class=\"key\">Opt<\/span> + <span class=\"key\">G<\/span>) \/ (<span class=\"key\">Ctrl<\/span> + <span class=\"key\">Opt<\/span> + <span class=\"key\">G<\/span>). Do the same to the Divide and Right Hole layers.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/balinese-barong-mask\/barong-mask-step-006a.jpg\" width=\"243\" height=\"398\" alt=\"Balinese Barong Mask\"><\/figure>\n<p>Paint the sides dark with a soft round brush on the new layers. Paint with black and with a thin brush opacity setting; you can use 30%.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/balinese-barong-mask\/barong-mask-step-006b.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"370\" alt=\"Balinese Barong Mask\"><\/figure>\n<h3>Step 7<\/h3>\n<p>Do the same for the base of the nose with dark red. Create a new layer, set the <strong>Blend Mode<\/strong> to <strong>Multiply<\/strong>, and make a <strong>Clipping Mask<\/strong>, then paint the dark side with a thin opacity soft round brush. You may increase or decrease the opacity setting of the brush if needed but I prefer several thin brushing to just one thick brushing.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/balinese-barong-mask\/barong-mask-step-007.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"330\" alt=\"Balinese Barong Mask\"><\/figure>\n<h3>Step 8<\/h3>\n<p>After that, add highlight to the nose. Create a <strong>Clipping Mask<\/strong> new layer with <strong>Screen<\/strong> blending mode. Paint the highlight white.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/balinese-barong-mask\/barong-mask-step-008.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" alt=\"Balinese Barong Mask\"><\/figure>\n<h3>Step 9<\/h3>\n<p>Draw a circle for the left eye. Note the change in gradient.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Blend Mode: Multiply<\/li>\n<li>Opacity: 75%<\/li>\n<li>*Set the gradient <strong>#ad941d<\/strong> to transparent<\/li>\n<li>Technique: Softer<\/li>\n<li>Source: Edge<\/li>\n<li>Size: 21 px<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/balinese-barong-mask\/barong-mask-step-012.jpg\" width=\"320\" height=\"283\" alt=\"Balinese Barong Mask\"><\/figure>\n<h3>Step 13<\/h3>\n<p>Create a shape for the frame of the eye with a <strong>#c3a720 <\/strong>color setting. And give it <strong>Drop Shadow<\/strong> and <strong>Bevel and Emboss<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/balinese-barong-mask\/barong-mask-step-013a.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" alt=\"Balinese Barong Mask\"><\/figure>\n<p>Draw this small shape and copy all layer effects from the eye frame. And the color setting also should be same, that is <strong>#c3a720<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/balinese-barong-mask\/barong-mask-step-013b.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" alt=\"Balinese Barong Mask\"><\/figure>\n<h3>Step 14<\/h3>\n<p>For adding highlights to the eye, draw a shape (like below) in front of the eye part layers. In a new layer, use a soft round brush in white like you see below. There will be a bit of a difference because of the angle of view. As you can see below, there are 3 shapes drawn, a tulip-like center and two half-moons above each eye. For the two, use <strong>#c3a720<\/strong>. Set the <strong>Blend Mode<\/strong> of the highlight layer to <strong>Screen<\/strong>, and the shadow layers to <strong>Multiply<\/strong>.
