Few readers were asking if I\u2019ll release a guide on creating the furly tiger \/ leopard skinned \"X\"<\/strong> I\u2019ve used in the Leopard wallpaper<\/a>. Well, if you want it I\u2019ll try my best to illustrate the guide on creating them.<\/p>\n

But first, I\u2019d like to declare that this isn\u2019t an original idea of mine, rather a design I pickup when browsing through a Photoshop book in some store couple of months back. The steps should be similar, although I can\u2019t remember much of the details in the book. Full tutorial after jump.<\/p>\n

Step 1<\/h2>\n

Create a new document at your preferred size and create an alphabet in the middle. For your reference, I\u2019m using a canvas at the size of 500 x 400 pixels<\/strong>, Adobe Garamond<\/strong> font.<\/p>\n

Step 2<\/h2>\n

Change the alphabet\u2019s color to orange color [#ffa70e<\/strong>]. Choose Lasso Tool, hold SHIFT key<\/em><\/strong>, and randomly highlighting small portions within the alphabet.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Step 3<\/h2>\n

Create a new layer on top of your alphabet, name it spots<\/strong><\/em>. Select black color [#000000<\/strong>] and fill up the highlighted parts. Your design should look something like this image below.<\/p>\n

Step 4<\/h2>\n

We are going to get rid of the black spots outside the alphabet. Select the alphabet\u2019s outline by holding Control key<\/strong> (mac \u2013 command key) + left click alphabet\u2019s layer thumbnail. With the outline selected, do a Control Shift + I<\/strong> (mac \u2013 Command Shift + I) to reverse the selection. Select spots<\/em><\/strong> layer, hit delete<\/strong> to remove the outter parts.<\/p>\n

Step 5<\/h2>\n

Select both alphabet<\/strong><\/em> and spots<\/strong><\/em> layer, merge them using Layer -> Merge Layers<\/strong>. Then duplicate another copy of the layer by selecting the layer, right click -> Duplicate layer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Step 6<\/h2>\n

Hold Control key<\/strong> (mac \u2013 Command key), select the first layer to highlight the outline. Select Lasso Tool,<\/strong> hold Alt key<\/strong> (mac \u2013 Option key) and draw away the top right and bottom left portion of the alphabet.<\/p>\n

Step 7<\/h2>\n

With the selection still highlighted, go to Filter -> Noise -> Add Noise.<\/strong> Insert these following settings:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Amount: 50%<\/strong><\/li>\n
  • Distribution: Gaussian<\/strong><\/li>\n
  • Monochromatic checked<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Step 8<\/h2>\n

    Maintaining the selection, now go to Filter -> Blur -> Motion Blur<\/strong>. Insert the following settings:<\/p>\n

      \n
    • Angle: -53<\/strong><\/li>\n
    • Distance: 10<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Step 9<\/h2>\n

      Now on the same layer, repeat Step 6,7 and 8<\/strong> for the other side of the alphabet. Just make sure that on Step 8, you have the Angle set to 43<\/strong> or any angles you feel right. Your image should look something like this.<\/p>\n

      Step 10<\/h2>\n

      Select the furly \"X\" layer, right click -> Blending Options<\/strong> and insert the following styles.<\/p>\n

        \n
      1. In Bevel and Emboss<\/strong>, set Size to 13px<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        Hold Control key<\/strong> (mac \u2013 Command), left click to highlight the selection. Go to Select -> Modify -> Contract<\/strong>, insert 1 pixel<\/strong>, then Control Shift + I<\/strong> (mac \u2013 Command Shift + I) to invert. Hit Delete<\/strong> key.<\/p>\n

        Step 11<\/h2>\n

        Swap both alphabet \"X\" layers, bottom to up, and up to bottom. On the new top layer, change the layer setting to Soft Light<\/strong> and opacity to 70%<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

        Step 12<\/h2>\n
