I met Akio Morita, co-founder of Sony, in the early nineteen eighties, when he was opening an exhibition of Sony design and the company's history. He said then that the company name was designed simply to sound friendly, and was based on "Sonny", no mention then of any latin links. It is doubtful that either Morita or his co-founder, Masaru Ibuka knew any latin at all.
