Mobile Number Portability means subscribers are able to change to another network providers (Maxis, DiGi, Celcom, etc) without the need to change their mobile phone numbers.
This idea was proposed 3 years ago and according to Energy, Water and Communications Minister of Malaysia – Datuk Seri Dr Lim Keng Yaik. It is likely to be implemented this June 2007 and this will requires all telcos to co-operate else it will not be achievable.
According to Datuk Seri Dr Lim Keng Yaik
“Those who do not cooperate will be penalised”

Just done this in New Zealand.
Even with unprecedented co-operation between the networks it took 2 years. A lot of technology has to be put in place. A lot of code has to be changed if it has hard-coded prefixes to dfferentiate networks. Testing alone took 3 months.
If networks have nothing else to do then it can be achieved in 12 months but best to reserve 18 months.
