What is Pownce

Pownce is a new startup by Kevin Rose, founder of Digg.com. In a nutshell Pownce behaves like Twitter but more functionality. Besides updating your fellow friends and followers what you’ve been up to, Pownce allows you to send files, share events and post link messages. It is an AIR a.k.a Adobe Integrated Runtime (formerly known as Apollo) application, this means it can run either on web or as a desktop application.

What can Pownce do?

Send instance messages, link, files and events.

These are the basic yet core functions of Pownce. As a registered user of Pownce you are allow to exchange texts, links and files (up to 10Mb) with friends you added (provided they are users of Pownce too). You can even create and announce particular events. Here’s a screenshot on creating events and how events look like.

Group friends in sets

One function I long waiting to see but did not happen in Twitter is this -, able to group friends by categories. Here in Pownce, you can do that. The good thing about set is, you are able to send files to the friends in the group at once.

Filter your notes

In the long run, you’ll surely have tones of messages stacked within your account and Pownce knows that. So they come out with function enabling you to sort your view by “Messages“, “Links“, “Files“, “Events“, “Replies“, and “Send by Me“. I find this extremely useful. You will not want to look through a long list of messages just to look for a particular link post by your friend months ago.

Play with themes

Pownce comes with 4 theme templates, but what I would like to see here is an option to customize our own theme.

Notification management

Notifications are sent to e-mails. Here in Pownce you have the filter and choose which amongst you to receive in emails.

Pownce on Desktop

Pownce on desktop uses the technology of AIR (Adobe Integrated Runtime). To get it working, you must be either on Windows or Mac (Linux version coming soon). If you already have a Pownce account, head over here to Pownce download page. Pownce desktop application does not have full ability compared to the web version, but it is enough for message, link and file communication; also creating events.

Pownce is however still on testing stage, therefore only those with invitations get to play with it at the moment. I’ve got some invitations here.
