Most sites come with RSS feeds, but even if they don’t you still can get first hand information when contents are updated. Update Scanner is an awesome Firefox plugin that allows you to add any websites to monitoring, and get notified once the website has been updated.
You can also set the checking frequency by altering the Autoscan and Change Threshold.
