Always good to read an article from hongkiat, though i would like to add to the post 4 things i’ve learned when designing multilingual websites:

1. Check the encoding for the language(s) you will be using, it will save you hours if you do it before production time. Read the ISO, UTF-8 and UNICODE documentation and check which approach will work best for you.
2. Don’t start by designing the website in english. English is a pretty-straight forward language and it’s words are usually a lot shorter than other languages. Analyze which language contains more characters per word and design based on that particular language.
3. Again, never use english as your base language for selecting a font, english language has no special characters and never go for a cheap/free font.
4. Evaluate which language is better off to have a website made from scratch, sometimes the effort and time spent trying to accommodate a right-to-left reading language into a “westernized” version is just not worth it. It’s easier and faster, to just re-create your design template based on a different navigation and focus points. Plus, your design will be more appealling as it will look “local”.
