If you’re a video fan and spend a lot of time watching online video, here’s a must-have Firefox add-on for you to play a particular online video at Firefox sidebar – YouPlayer. In short, YouPlayer is a video player with playlist which works on Firefox sidebar while you are surfing the Internet on the right.

How To Use YouPlayer

Firstly, install YouPlayer Firefox add-on. Upon installation, click on “YP” on the bottom right side in your Firefox browser.

To start to watch an online video, you can click on “Search” button in YouPlayer to search a video in YouTube, Google Video, Metacafe, DailyMotion or MySpace.

You may drag and drop a link or local files from hard drive into a playlist window. When you double-click of it, it will be loaded in the video window.

You can save the playlist and make it work as a bookmarker so you can always continue to watch the unfinished video in your playlist.

Previously, I mentioned about a neat Firefox trick that allows you to duplicate the tab on the fly by just dragging it to a new space. Anyway here what I failed to figure out, and thought would be cool to have:

Support Mac’s Firefox

Keyboard shortcut instead of mouse dragging

Thanks for readers tip-in, there’s work around for both now.

Firefox in Windows

[Mouse] – Hold Control, drag tab to new space.

[Keyboard shortcut] – Click URL (highlight), Alt + Enter

Firefox in Mac

[Mouse] – Hold Command, drag tab to new space.

[Keyboard shortcut] – Click URL (highlight), Option + Enter

Here’s a rather quick way to duplicate one Firefox tab to another without the need to open new tab, retype the url and wait for the webpage to load. All you need to do is hold Control (Windows) key, drag the current tab to a new place (you’ll see a + sign when you drag), release it and brand new tab is created with the exact same website. Little nice find by Ashish of Technospot.

This however, will only work in Windows. Holding Command key in Mac does not have any effect. If you don’t understand how this works, watch a video over at technospot.net.

Firefox tabs kept webpages organized within single browser, but if your tabs are overflowing your tabs bar, consider grouping them up with this Firefox plugin – Tab Groups.

Tab Groups allows you to group specific tabs together under one, and rename them to whatever you want. There’s also an indication telling you how many tabs under each group. But be warned, more tabs means your Firefox will likely to utilized more resources, thus performing slower.

Facebook Chat is cool, at least it allows you to send instant messages to online Facebook contacts. However I’m not really a fan of the chat bar being at the bottom of the page, what if I’ve left Facebook but still wants to remain chatting with my Facebook contacts? If you are using Firefox, you can place the Facebook Chat at the sidebar.

Step 1

Look for Bookmarks on the top navigation. Select Organize Bookmarks…

Step 2

Click New Bookmark... tab and enter the following:

Name: Facebook Chat

Location: http://www.facebook.com/presence/popout.php

Check Load this bookmark in sidebar.

Step 3

Launch the Firefox sidebar, click Facebook Chat and start chatting with your Facebook contacts within Firefox.

[Mac only] Are you eager to try out the latest Firefox 3 beta but not ready to give up on your Firefox 2 yet? Normally when a new version of Firefox gets installed, it’ll replace the current version in the machine and it practically makes reverting a tedious task. Here’s how you can get a taste of the latest Firefox 3 beta and still keep your Firefox 2 together with its profile settings and bookmarks working perfectly fine; in short, keeping 2 versions of Firefox in Mac.

Assuming you already have a Firefox 2 installed in your Mac:

Download latest Firefox 3 beta.

Double click to launch the installation dialog.

Drag the Firefox application to desktop (instead of Application folder)

Rename it to something else, Firefox-3-beta.app for instance.

Now drag the renamed Firefox 3 back into Application folder.

Double click on Firefox 3 and viola, it’s running with Firefox 2 safely untouched. To revert back to Firefox 2, just delete the Firefox 3 app.

Webshots

OmniDrive

Imagine using this to handle all your future uploads without going to each of the websites. Firefox Universal Uploader supports multiple files uploading and keeps you notified on statuses of the uploads. Developer Rahul Jonna promises more supports for other sites like Google Video in future. I really hope to see this supporting more social network like Bebo, Myspace, Friendster, etc.

[Firefox only] Screengrab! is a Firefox plugin that allows you to do printscreen of the website you are currently viewing, regardless it’s a selection or the entire website (that includes those you don’t see in the lower fold). The plugin is light, and taking the fact that when it had to printscreen a website with long scrolling content, blogs for instance, it didn’t take me too long. Screengrab! outputs the screen capture in either .JPG or .PNG.

You’ll need a Firefox browser to see Screengrab! in action. Definitely a very useful tool for web designers, developers and bloggers.

In conjunction with Alexa Toolbar’s 10th anniversary, folks at Alexa released their toolbar for Mozilla Firefox browser, codename Sparky. Here are the features of Sparky, the Alexa Toolbar for Firefox; directly pulled from the blog:

Features of Sparky

Sparkline – A very small condensed traffic history graph. Gives you a quick view to show whether the site is moving up or down.

Rank – Shows the traffic rank of the site.

Reach Indicator – Provides a qualitative view of whether a site’s rank is good or bad.

Related Links – Provides up to 10 Related links in the browser’s File | Edit | View menu.

Shortcuts – Clicking on Sparky brings up a menu of other handy shortcuts, including Alexa Detail pages, Cached Pages, Search Pages and more.

So now we have Alexa toolbar for both IE and Firefox, will we expect to see a rise in rankings and figures after Sparky gets more downloads? After all, tech savvy users prefer Firefox more.

Here’s what we usually do. To open links of multiple pages, we click each of them one by one. Firefox has a cool plugin that helps you speed things up a little.

Drag across to open all

Snap Links helps you open multiple links within selected area in tabs. All you need to do is hold mouse’s right click and drag the across the hyperlinks. Highlighted areas are in dotted green and hyperlinks detected will be boxed in red. Upon release of right click, links will be open in tabs. Simple as that.
