This morning, folks at Alexa has done a major updates over their Alexa Ranking System which cause some sites to have major rank increase, while some seen drops. Looking at what Alexa has in store now, the chart now shows only a maximum of 9 months statistics, compared to the previous 5 years max. However Alexa promises that these historic traffics data will come back later.
We are recalculating historic traffic data and will continue to add it over the coming weeks. We apologize for the inconvenience, but should have several years of data back on line shortly.
With the new Alexa rankings, does that means what we’ve been using previously was wrong? Alexa says no.
Your ranking wasn’t wrong before, but it was different. Alexa toolbar users’ interests and surfing habits could differ from those of the general population in a number of ways, and we described some of those possible differences on our website. While the vast majority of sites’ rankings were unaffected by such differences, we’ve worked hard on our new ranking system to adjust for situations in which they could matter.
The new rankings should better reflect the interests and surfing habits of the broader population of Web users.
Perhaps what these guys is trying to say here is, now the stats is more accurate as they are now taking more factors into determining one’s ranking instead of depending on Alexa Toolbar.
New Ranking Accuracy
For those who’s ranking boost, it’s definitely a good news, but how accurate is the new ranking though? Folks at RWW says it’s still not good enough. Hongkiat.com ranking dropped from 20,000k to 40,000+ after Alexa tweaked the algorithm. So then I compared with a friend who’s site has similar traffic to mine. He’s got 30,000+ in Alexa. My conclusion, still not too accurate but is better now.
My ranking dropped!
It’s not really the end of the world. This will not kill my motivation to blog. Been there, done that and will do it again. :-)

Why do you all care about Alexa rankings? It doesn’t change how many people visit your site.

I hate to say this but the reason why I care is because I know my direct advertisers care. Ranking is all about them :-) As for the ad networks I’m currently using, there’s no effects on the drop.

Strangely, we are seeing a consistent increase in the number of unique visitors through Statcounter.com, the changes in Alexa ranking are slightly dis-aligned.
Wondering, how to make our visitors install Alexa Tool bar!!!
