Time machine updates itself every one hour when there is a external HDD formated for it. If no, it will not.

Time Machine utilizes Mac OS X's Unix based file system to make this process very efficient.

Personally I would say that this is definitely a very practical tool for both home users and absolutely professionals. See the best thing about this is that it is SO easy to use, and these days also very cost effective.

I don't see why people wouldn't set this up in order to practically avoid the risk of losing your important personal computing data, whatever it might be.

One question I have is this, how does Time Machine handle the computer being taken off the external drive for a period of time. For example you have a laptop and take it to work each day where you do not have your external drive. Does Time Machine just update like normal once you plug it back in at home? I'd say it does but I'm not sure.

I do not use OSX and have some questions.
Is TM really necessary for home users or just for profs?
How do you think will people use it or this is just great marketing product?

Thanks
